Feeling Autumn

autumn's kiss

I love this time of year, especially on the trail where I run. Observing seasonal changes is a big part of the enjoyment I find in living. Each year, autumn’s bright color display truly lights up my life.

Recently, I was reflecting on the bittersweet nature of autumn which I believe is much like the ever-changing nature of life; both filled with fleeting moments of beauty — painful beauty — a reminder to appreciate this temporary existence.

A path leads into the woods that I refuse to take.

No streams to follow.

No clearing of the way.

Pricked by thorns and brambles,

I bleed.

Snapping limbs of weakness, breaking branches over rot,

with reverence I walk over scattered, dying leaves.

There is beauty in decay.

Fairness turning, change to savor, peace abiding, death —

I see.

Autumn’s exquisite spirit in this place,

these words,

We can’t know what life will bring and can’t control what will come, but we can focus on each step in front of us, right?

With much love,

  1. Wonderful post Kelly. Beautiful poetic thoughts. It is my favourite season as well. Always good. All the very best. Chris.

  2. I like the rhythm of your words, the way they flow certainly speaks of the reflective moments of winter 🙂

  3. Nice one Kelly, love autumn, autumn needs the love!

  4. A lovely reflection and poem, Kelly. I like autumn too. Each season and the four in combination give us opportunities to reflect on the circles of life that roll around us everywhere. 🙂

    • Beautiful, Diana. I’ve always liked the feeling of wholeness the circle of life carries, how one season just flows into the next. I find myself most soulful at this time of year, like coming home to my own deeper nature. And I like to think of my soul like the seasons, with no beginning or ending. I meditated on that this morning and was interrupted by a thousand birds that descended on my yard as a matter of fact, it was surreal! Don’t know if that was an omen of some kind or not! I read somewhere that it symbolizes the opening of a spiritual path… or the coming of chaos! I will hope for the best! 🙂

  5. So many people look forward to this time of year. The change in weather, the decorations that accompany 3 holiday seasons and the joy of sharing time with friends and family. A truly remarkable time of year!

  6. yes, you are so very right about this. and fall is my favorite season –

  7. Beautifully descriptive word, Kelly.
There is beauty in death, isn’t there. The final search meets the final answer.
    Or does it?

  8. Excellent! and very descriptive on your poetic thoughts.
Kelly, life is but a big question mark, that only the winds themselves know the answer too. Or does the wind itself carries the answer to life’s big question?

    • “The answer my friend is blowin’ in the wind…” couldn’t resist!
Hello Charlie Zero! Thank you very much for the kind words. That is a very poetic question! My response to you is that it is all about what is going on on the inside, not the outside. And what you say internally WILL make or break you.
Stay in constant awe of life and give; show your heart and kindness to others. I think that’s what it’s all about. Have a great night and thanks again for the visit! 🙂

  9. What a beautiful analogy ! Diane

  10. I wish I had seen this in the Fall! But poignant nonetheless!
